KEEP POLITICS OUT OF
K-12 CLASSROOMS:

teach how to think, not what to think

Parents, teachers, and community members report increasing concerns about ideological bias in public school classrooms.

Without clear policies protecting viewpoint neutrality, students may be exposed to one-sided political messaging rather than balanced civic education. LEARN MORE about this campaign.

CLASSROOM COMMITMENT:

Regardless of my personal opinion, in this classroom, I will remain neutral on controversi

JOIN OUR MOVEMENT:
We invite parents, educators, administrators, and community members to join us in supporting Responsible K–12 Education by signing this letter today.

We are parents, teachers, administrators, educational leaders, and community members united by a shared commitment to the primary purpose of K–12 education.

We write this open letter to call on all educators - teachers, administrators, staff, school board members - to commit to the following Responsible K–12 Education Commitment:

“As your teacher, I will remain neutral on controversial topics regardless of my personal opinion."

We have seen far too many educators use their classrooms not for educational instruction, but for political posturing and ideological indoctrination.

In an era of deep polarization and heightened emotions, this kind of institutional or instructional advocacy on controversial issues risks alienating students, dividing communities, and suppressing the free exchange of ideas essential to democratic learning.

Responsible Educators do not tell students what to think, they provide an environment where students can learn how to think

In the K–12 environment, where educators are working with our youngest and most susceptible students, it is essential for educators to recognize the inherent power imbalance between educator and student.

This power imbalance means educators must be that much more careful not to use their outsized influence to impose their own biases upon young students.

Responsible Educators provide an environment that is age-appropriate and fair and balanced to allow every student to evaluate different perspectives.

This is not about silencing educators. Educators can and should freely express their views outside the sacred walls of their classrooms.

But, as the National Education Association rightly points out, schools can “restrict educator’s speech so that the school remains neutral on controversial topics.”
